Designer Notes… Special Functions
One question that often comes up when folks first look into the Combat Cards is “Do the units have any special functions?”. After all, what makes a Recon Unit different from an Armored Unit? Or a Command unit different from an Infantry Unit?
The simple answer is yes, many units have unique functions in the game that differentiate them from other units. Accessing these special functions is done through the cards as Actions or Situations that are only playable on those specific units. Some of these special qualities allow extra movement, or to spot a hidden foe, while others allow for indirect fire or smoke screens. Some qualities can only be utilized by a unit on its turn, others at any time. It all depends on the function and whether it is an Action or Situation.
What makes this method of utilizing special functions such a fun challenge is it requires foresight in selecting the right units for your force (so you can utilize as many different functions as possible during the battle), as well as the flexibility to be able to recognize the best use of that ability when it becomes available (i.e. when you get the card in your hand). When you build your force right, and use the functions to maximum effect, you feel like a genius. When you don’t, well that is what brings you back for the next battle – to try and do better.
One other really nice feature of having the special functions on the cards themselves is that the complete rules for each function is on the card as well, so there is little need to refer back to the rules once you get the basics down. Many an experienced Combat Cards player will not even look at the Quick Reference Guide for the entire game, in part due to the needed information being directly on the cards.
So someone who is considering trying out the Combat Cards can rest assured that many units have special and unique functions in the game. The reason that they are not readily visible however, is because they are referenced on the cards themselves rather than in the rules to facilitate a faster play style.
