Tactics… Infiltrators
One of the most underutilized, and yet potential deadly, units in the Combat Cards is the Infiltrator Unit. Its ability to appear just about anywhere on the battlefield, at just about any time, gives it the opportunity to be a decisive factor in any battle. Despite this, many players simply over look this unit in their force construction.
While Infiltrators cost slightly more than a regular Infantry Unit, they still have all of the characteristics of an Infantry Unit – including a fairly impressive Close Combat attack. In addition, the ability to bring the Infiltrators onto the battlefield is a Situation, meaning they could be brought into the battle at any time and during anyone’s turn. Further, because it is a Situation that brings them in, they could have an Action played on them right away as well (if it is the owning player’s turn) possibly allowing them to immediately assault or fire at a nearby target before the enemy can make any adjustments to their appearance.
Infiltrators also make good diversionary units. If the enemy is pressing too hard in one area of the battlefield, the appearance of one or more Infiltrator Units somewhere else is sure to divert their attention and give you some breathing room.
Now, as with everything in the game, there is a bane to the Infiltrator – the Recon Unit. The presence of enemy Recon Units can dramatically restrict where the Infiltrators may appear on the battlefield. When facing these Recon Units, you just have to be aware of where you would like to Infiltrators to appear, and then target any Recon Units in the area to clear the way. You may want to be careful in how you go about doing this though, so as to not to tip off your opponent to your true intentions.
Given their relatively inexpensive cost, and decent combat characteristics, Infiltrator Units are really a hidden gem in any force. Woe to anyone who dismisses them too quickly, as they may become the next victim of their surprise attacks on the battlefield.
